Egg Prices in Pakistan: A Winter Supply Story
Egg prices spike every year — but the real driver isn’t just consumption.
It’s supply tightening in winter.
Looking at Karachi and Islamabad, the pattern is hard to miss:
Prices rise steadily into Nov–Jan
Often peak around Rs 400+ per dozen
Then fall sharply by Feb–Mar
❄️ What’s happening in winter? (Supply side)
some speculations?
Poultry output becomes less efficient in colder weather
Birds lay fewer eggs under temperature stress
Feed and heating costs increase, pushing farm-gate prices up
Smaller farms sometimes cut back production after losses
Supply gets tighter just when the market needs more eggs
📍 Karachi vs Islamabad: Same curve
Both cities move almost identically.
Which suggests:
Pricing is driven by central poultry supply (Punjab belt)
Not local city-level demand differences
Better transportation creates a national market and therefore a national price
