Pakistan’s POS Revolution: Debit Cards Dominate as Everyday Consumers Go Digital
Pakistan’s point-of-sale (POS) ecosystem continues to expand rapidly, reflecting a gradual but meaningful shift toward digital payments in everyday retail transactions.
Recent data from the Gallup Pakistan Digital Analytics dashboard based on State Bank of Pakistan payment statistics highlights several interesting patterns.
Dashboard can be accessed here : https://lnkd.in/dVJC4QKd
First, debit cards overwhelmingly dominate POS transactions compared to credit cards.
Across recent quarters, roughly 60–65% of POS transactions are conducted using debit cards, while credit cards account for around 35–40%.
In many advanced economies, credit cards drive POS usage. In Pakistan, however, the dominance of debit cards suggests that POS machines are increasingly being used by the average banking customer rather than a narrow high-income credit card segment. In other words, POS usage is becoming mainstream, not just premium.
Second, domestic cards dominate transactions.
Around 94–97% of purchases are made using locally issued cards, while foreign cards account for only a very small share.
Pakistan’s retail digitization is being powered by local consumers, not just tourism or international cardholders.
Third, the overall volume of POS purchases continues to rise steadily.
Transaction volumes have grown significantly over the past few years, with periodic surges as digital adoption expands across retail outlets, restaurants, fuel stations, and shopping centers.
Taken together, the story is clear:
• POS usage is growing
• Everyday consumers are driving adoption
• Debit cards are leading the shift
• Domestic spending dominates the ecosystem
For Pakistan’s digital economy, this is a quiet but important structural change — payments are slowly moving from cash to cards at the retail counter.
As POS networks expand further alongside Raast, mobile banking, and e-commerce, the next phase of Pakistan’s payment story may be about scale rather than adoption.
