Pakistan: World Leader in Second-Hand Clothing Imports — and Usage.
A new Gallup Pakistan survey reveals that 48% of Pakistanis report buying used clothing (e.g., sweaters, coats) from Landa Bazaars (market for used clothes) in the past year.
That’s close to 60 million adults claiming to have bought at least some clothing.
These markets remain deeply embedded in Pakistan’s consumer landscape.
Pakistan is now the world’s largest importer of used clothing, bringing in $335 million worth in 2023 — more than any other country globally. The fastest growing origins for Used Clothing imports in Pakistan between 2022 and 2023 were: Germany ($3.57M), United Arab Emirates ($2.86M), and Australia ($2.82M).
Interestingly we also export used clothes . In 2023, Pakistan exported $154M of Used Clothing, making it the 8th largest exporter of Used Clothing (out of 213) in the world. The fastest growing markets for Used Clothing exports from Pakistan between 2022 and 2023 were: Kenya ($6.1M), Republic of the Congo ($1.63M), and Austria ($1.01M).
