Farewell to Arms: The Cost of Leaving Pakistan

Rising living costs, declining economic opportunities, lack of development, and an ongoing
security crisis are just a few of the mounting challenges that compel thousands of Pakistanis to
seek better prospects abroad. According to data from Gallup Pakistan’s Overseas Pakistanis
Dashboard, the average annual emigration trend stands at 22,668 individuals. The Middle East
continues to be the primary destination, currently hosting over 13 million Pakistani migrants.
However, in recent decades, there has been a gradual shift, with growing emigration to Europe
and North America – an indication of changing aspirations and global connectivity.

In terms of occupational profile, the Pakistani diaspora remains largely concentrated in
blue-collar sectors. A significant majority work as labourers, drivers, masons, carpenters, and
technicians. This occupational pattern reflects systemic limitations in domestic skill development
and highlights the socio-economic background of many emigrants. Compared to other Asian
diaspora communities – such as Indians, Iranians, and even Bangladeshis – Pakistanis remain
underrepresented in white-collar professions abroad. This underrepresentation speaks not only to
missed opportunities for upward mobility but also to a broader failure to nurture, retain, and
strategically export high-skilled talent.
Most overseas Pakistanis are employed in low-skilled sectors in the Gulf Cooperation Council
(GCC) countries, which reinforces a dependency on remittances without necessarily translating
into long-term development gains. While the inflow of hard currency provides short-term
economic relief and sustains millions of households back home, it also obscures the urgent need
for reform in education, employment policy, and labour export strategies to reposition Pakistanis
in the global labour market.
