Understanding Welfare with Data

At Gallup Pakistan Digital Analytics, we are working on a new Welfare Index using data from the Pakistan Census 2023. This index helps us see how different areas in the country are doing in terms of health, education, housing, and other basic services. Our goal is to make this data available down to the Tehsil level, even though the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) only released it in PDF format. It has been a challenge, but the insights are worth the effort!

Key Findings from the Welfare Index

Based on the beta version of our dashboard, here are some interesting results:

• Islamabad ranks highest in welfare, scoring the best in most of the ten indicators we are using.

   

• Karachi Central District comes second, but when all Karachi districts are combined, the rank goes down.

   

• Sialkot takes third place, showing its strength as an industrial hub.

   

• No district from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Balochistan, or Sindh (except Karachi) is in the top 15.

   

• None of the bottom 15 districts come from Punjab.

   

Why This Matters

This shows a clear regional gap in development across Pakistan. If only a few areas keep growing while others are left behind, the whole country may suffer in the long run. Punjab is doing well, but if the other provinces are not supported, this unequal growth could hurt Pakistan’s future.

To build a strong and united Pakistan, we need to focus on fair and balanced development for every region.
