The Rise of Motorcycles in Pakistan: A Household Asset on the Move
March 28, 2025
Political analysis in Pakistan is often based on opinions rather than data. However, since 1979, Gallup Pakistan has been working to bring data-driven insights to politics. Our team at Gallup Pakistan Digital Analytics has now digitized the Election Commission of Pakistan’s official results into a dashboard, covering all general elections since 1988. This dashboard helps us understand voting trends and the shifting political landscape in Pakistan.
One key finding from the data is the continuous decline of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which were once the two biggest political parties in the country. This decline did not happen overnight. The data shows that PPP’s vote bank started shrinking in the 1990s, while PML-N’s decline began in the 2000s. Over time, both parties have lost a large number of voters.
So, where is this vote bank going? The data suggests that as PPP and PML-N lost voters, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) emerged as new political forces. The movement of voters from traditional parties to these newer parties has changed Pakistan’s political dynamics.
But why are people shifting their political preferences? One major reason is the rise of the middle class. More people in Pakistan now belong to an aspirational middle class that seeks better governance, economic opportunities, and transparency. Gallup Pakistan’s Exit Polls provide deeper insights into voter behavior, helping us understand these political shifts.
Using data in politics can help reduce political polarization and encourage informed decision-making among voters. Rather than relying on emotions or assumptions, empirical political analysis allows us to understand the realities of voter behavior.
